If you’re an airsofter using a gas blow back gun (GBB), you’ll hopefully be aware of what your weapon’s magazine is and what purpose it serves in aiding the firing process. Just to reiterate, a magazine is the part of your gun dedicated to holding the plastic BB pellets which are used as the primary ammunition in airsoft skirmishes. For GBBs, magazines are also used to store the propellant gas used to provide velocity to each shot and, ultimately, fire the BBs down the gun’s barrel to hit your target. As such, it’s important to understand the correct way to fill your magazines with gas to ensure you get the most out of the time and money invested in your equipment.
Here’s how:
Before we get started, you’ll need two things:
- The magazine itself
- A can of your favourite airsoft gas
First things first, remove the cap from your gas canister and make sure you’re holding it upside down as illustrated below. This stage is important as the gas is actually stored in a liquid state and holding it in this position will help facilitate a much smoother draining process into the magazine. Next, insert the nozzle into the fill port whilst ensuring both the gas can and the magazine are correctly aligned with one another. The can should not be off to one side but, instead, held in parallel to the magazine in order to provide an optimum transfer process and avoid snapping the nozzle. Now all you need to do is simply apply pressure down onto the gas bottle for about ten seconds (ish) and then release – you should hear a quiet ‘hissing’ noise but don’t worry, this is perfectly normal. Using an intervallic method helps to acclimatise the gas and the magazine to the change in temperature and will allow more gas to be held in each magazine. Repeat this process in ten second stages until the hissing noise becomes louder and you begin to see gas leaving the magazine. At this stage, the magazine is completely filled with gas and ready to be used in your next skirmish. Remember to put the cap back on your gas canister, store in a cool, dry place and then… you’re done!
