What Gearbox Does an M4 AEG Airsoft Rifle Use?

Airsoft M4s are the most common style of airsoft rifle, with their AEG variants using what is known as a 'V2' gearbox. The broad popularity of the M4 platform in airsoft makes the V2 effectively the standard airsoft gearbox which most players have some familiarity with. They have a reputation for being highly-reliable, easy to work on and having an enormous pool of replacement parts and aftermarket upgrades.

The V2 gearbox was originally designed by game-changing Japanese airsoft manufacturer Tokyo Marui, who previously designed the now obscure but historically significant 'V1' gearbox, hence the V2 name following in succession. Despite being closely associated with airsoft M4s, the V2 gearbox made its debut in 1994 inside Tokyo Marui's MP5 AEG.
