What are the internals like in BOLT's MAS Gas Blowback Rifles?

BOLT personally claim around 90% of the parts in their MAS rifles are interchangeable with an original Tokyo Marui MWS rifle. Ironically, the main difference is the bolt itself - which is designed for extra kick in the MAS system. The extra recoil is certainly prevalent in these rifles.

Do BOLT make airsoft replicas of real Daniel Defense rifles?

Absolutely. The externals are built to replicate the exact look of DD's most iconic rifles: the MK18, M4 PDW and the V7 'Pistol'. These guns are officially licensed through EMG, who go the extra mile to make sure their replicas look as close to the real deal as possible. It's much more than just a brand name on a sticker: its the fit, finish and finer details.

Can I use MWS magazines in BOLT MAS guns?

Yes, we tested them - not just original Marui magazines, but Modify Tech's excellent aftermarket mags as well. Both slotted in without issue, and performed consistently when tested on the chronograph. However, the Modify Tech magazines provided an extra 30fps per shot over Marui's when tested cold, straight off-the-shelf. Thus, we recommend the Modify Tech MWS to anyone picking up spare mags for their BOLT MAS rifle.

Our favourite aspect of the MAS system is just how heavily it kicks, notably more than the MWS system that it's based on - definitely up there with some modified rifles we've tested. To withstand the recoil, the receiver and handguards have been built entirely from aluminium.

Something of note, BOLT have designed these to take real-steel AR charging handles with only slight modification - if you can somehow get your hands on a milspec charging handle in the UK, that is.

On magazines: of the original Marui and Modify-Tech MWS magazines, we recommend the latter for use in these rifles; they gave better power and consistency when tested from cold, on Nimrod Red Gas.

The range

Alongside the Daniel Defense licensed MK18 RIII, DDM4 V7 P and DDM4 PDW, the collection includes the BOLT MK18 MAS, the URGU9 MAS and the ELITE DX-B MAS, giving you a choice of short CQB builds and longer carbines. BOLT's own M4 MAS 35-round GBB magazine (MWS) is also available, so you can stock up on spares.

Choosing a BOLT GBBR

Think about where you'll play. Compact rifles such as the DDM4 PDW and MK18 are easy to manoeuvre indoors, while longer carbines offer more space for rails and accessories. Because the MAS system takes MWS-pattern magazines, you can choose from a wide range of magazines and many MWS-compatible accessories; always check the listing for specific part compatibility, as not every MWS internal will fit.

Gas and maintenance

Gas blowback rifles perform best when magazines are warm, so keep spares in a pouch close to your body on cold days. Keep magazine seals lubricated with silicone oil, clean and lightly lubricate the bolt and buffer area regularly, and set your hop-up for the BB weight you're using. Chronograph your rifle before playing and after any changes to make sure it's within your site's limits. A speedloader adapter for MWS magazines makes reloading between games much quicker, and it's well worth carrying spare O-rings and a small tool kit in your bag.

Who are they for?

BOLT's MAS rifles suit players who want a hard-kicking, realistic gas blowback rifle with the convenience of MWS magazine compatibility. The Daniel Defense licensed models are an obvious choice if you're building a modern, realistic loadout.

A valid defence such as UKARA is needed to buy a full-colour realistic imitation firearm. Two-tone versions can be bought by anyone aged 18 or over.
