THE VKS WEAPON SYSTEM (Real Steel) 

DESIGNATION & ORIGINS

 
The VKS / VSSK (ВКС / BCCKin Cyrillic), known by the project name “Vykhlop” (Выхлоп - Exhaust), is a special large-calibre silent sniper rifle developed in Russia. Its full Russian designation is Винтовка Снайперская Специальная Крупнокалиберная which literally means “Special Large-Caliber Sniper Rifle". The rifle carries the Russian military index 6C8 under the GRAU classification system, which designates the complete weapon and ammunition system. It was developed by the Central Design Bureau of Sporting and Hunting Weapons (TsKIB SOO) specifically for special purpose units of the Russian Federal Security Service (FSB). The rifle was first publicly shown at the Interpolitex exhibition in Moscow in 2005 and remains rare, produced in limited numbers for elite units. Since its introduction, the rifle has undergone numerous revisions and refinements rather than remaining a fixed, standardised design

OPERATING PRINCIPLE & AMMUNITION

Its bullpup layout and straight-pull bolt action are optimised for compactness and stealthy operation with an oversized suppressor. The VKS is designed to defeat lightly armoured targets and well-protected personnel at ranges up to around 600 m while maintaining a low acoustic signature by firing the unique 12.7x55 mm STs-130 subsonic cartridge with heavy projectiles and an effective suppressor system. The rifle feeds from a 5-round detachable box magazine and can mount optical or night sights for precision fire.

 In popular culture and media, the rifle has appeared under a variety of names and portrayals in major video games. These include "VSK-50" in Tom Clancy's Ghost Recon Advanced Warfighter 2, "VKS" in CrossFire, and "Clapper" in Metro: Last Light. You can also find it in Call of Duty: Ghosts, Warface, Survarium, Contract Wars, Sniper: Ghost Warrior 3 (as Vikop), Ring of Elysium, Call to Arms, Ghost Recon Breakpoint, Sniper: Ghost Warrior Contracts and S.T.A.L.K.E.R. GAMMA. The representation and performance of this weapon in these video games vary to a greater or lesser extent compared to the real rifle.
