Frequently Asked Questions

Need To know more?

Are Gas Blowback Rifles Good for Beginners?

GBBRs are hugely rewarding, but they need more care than an AEG. Magazine capacity is lower, performance varies with temperature, and the magazines and internals need regular maintenance.

Many players start with an AEG and move to gas once they're comfortable. If realism is what you're after, though, our team can help you choose a forgiving first GBBR.

What Gas Should I Use in My GBBR?

Most gas blowback rifles are designed for green gas. Higher-pressure gases can increase wear or damage parts, so always follow the manufacturer's recommendation for your rifle and magazines.

Do Gas Blowback Rifles Work in Cold Weather?

Gas pressure falls as the temperature drops, so you may notice weaker blowback and lower FPS in winter. Keeping spare magazines warm between uses will help your rifle cycle more reliably.

Gas Blowback Airsoft Rifles

A gas blowback rifle (GBBR) stores its propellant inside the magazine. When you pull the trigger, a measured burst of gas fires the BB and drives the bolt carrier backwards, giving you the kick and sound of a real rifle. On many models, the bolt also locks back once the magazine is empty. Magazines hold a realistic number of rounds, typically around 30 to 40, so reloading becomes part of the game.

Popular GBBR platforms

Tokyo Marui's MWS system is one of the most popular M4 gas platforms, backed by a huge range of aftermarket upgrades. Alongside it, we stock the TM AKX, Saiga-12K shotgun and MP7A1, VFC's AK74M, AK105, L403A1 and M249, plus licensed EMG Noveske and Salvo Precision MCX rifles designed around the MWS system.

Running a gas rifle

Most GBBRs are designed for green gas, so always check the manufacturer's guidance before using a stronger gas. Gas pressure drops as temperatures fall, so many players carry spare GBBR magazines and keep them warm in colder months. Browse our airsoft gas range, including Nimrod Tactical, and use a magazine speedloader to fill your mags quickly.

Is a gas blowback rifle right for you?

GBBRs are hugely rewarding, but they suit some players more than others. Before you buy, it's worth thinking about:

  • Running costs: you'll need gas as well as BBs, and most players run several magazines because of the realistic capacity.
  • Weather: gas performance changes with temperature, so think about whether you'll be playing much in winter, or consider an HPA adapter for your magazines. See our HPA accessories.
  • Maintenance: a GBBR has more moving parts than an AEG, so regular cleaning and lubrication of the bolt carrier, nozzle and magazines will keep it cycling reliably.
  • Site rules: check your site's FPS limits and whether they allow full auto with your chosen platform.
